The Stormont Kings chess club is a scholastic
affiliate of the United States Chess Federation (USCF). Chris Stormont, Founder
and President, started the club in 1991. I also conduct nationally rated
tournaments, private and group chess lessons, tournament direct, etc. We have
several children that won state and national tournaments, beginners, and some
will come and learn how to play.
I learned how to play at the age of 9, and was
taught by my father and played ever since. My first opportunity to join a chess
club was at South Miami Middle. The coach there told me that I had potential of
being a strong player and invited me to a tournament between South Miami Middle
and West Miami Middle. I played and tied for first place, which made me very
proud. When I was in High School, I started a chess club in the school. Then I
found about a local chess club ran by a gentleman, and he had me take over the
club. He also told me to start my own chess club.
Now, I was conducting my own chess club. We
started out at a local Pizza Hut, and we moved to other locations for various
reasons, and now we meet at Kendall Branch Library and have been there for
several years. The library is the best location, since it is quiet, people can
also read books, and we have our own room where we hold the meetings.
I started to offer private and group chess
lessons. I have taught at Village Green Christian, Temple Beth Am, and the Dade
County Parks & Recreation. Now I am currently teaching at Kenwood K-8
Center, Pinecrest Elementary, and Sunset Elementary.
We now have rated tournaments, and also
tournament direct at Pinecrest Elementary and other schools. If your school would like to host a
tournament, please contact me.
My goal is to have chess played all over the
world, and a part of the school curriculum.
